it’s not you, it’s me

This work explores the complexities of the inner voice…when to listen to it, when to ignore it, and when to confront it. It considers the teetering point between self reflection and self criticism and disappearing into a crowd altogether as a form of self preservation.

“…the joyful hips with the pulsating rhythm had me sitting up and in the front of my seat from the start. And then your moving tableaux were *muah*. When I said I felt like I was in church, it was the part of the choreography that matched the weight of the music when there was a higher pitched chorus. There was an urgency and liturgical quality to it. Gorgeous, Jamila. Just gorgeous, deep, rich choreography I felt in my guts.” - Tanya Fairfoot-York

"You should be proud. Everything. The music. I just wanted it to go on and on and on. And it was so you. It was your DNA. Yeah your DNA was in that piece." -Raquel Horsford

"Your piece made me feel like I was at home in New Orleans with my family at my cookout with like…we’re partying but we can still hit it. I was legit crying. Your piece made me cry." -Lael Battiste
